ARRIVAL
October 20, 21, & 22 2014
In these three days, you will really dive into the Unit Question: Was Christopher Columbus a hero of a villain?
Monday, October 20th
ANTICIPATORY SET
"You've created your initial opinion about whether Columbus was a hero or a villain. Now try to argue for the other side. In other words, if you believe he was a hero, imagine he was a villain and defend that side. Give some examples you can think of how he may be a villain."

IN-CLASS
Read the following articles and watch the video in your group. You may divide them up however your group chooses (jig-saw or each-take-one is suggested) After reading the articles and watching the video, discuss them quickly in your groups. Decide if the sources seem credible to you. Feel free to click on the hyperlinks within each article to see where they found their information. Do those sources seem credible? After your group has discussed these, you will go back to your Historical Journal. You will have a five-minute free-write to answer the following question: Has your opinion of Columbus changed due to the articles read today in class? After each of your group members complete their free-write, brainstorm ideas of how the first interactions between Columbus's crew and the Native people of the Latin American countries went. With your brainstorm, you should start to write a dialogue between the two parties as this will help you for tomorrow's assignment. Consider including similarities and differences in interests, religious beliefs, etc. |

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
On an exit slip sticky, write if your opinion has changed or not (similar to what you wrote in your Historical Journal). Place your sticky on the traffic light as you exit the classroom -- opinions that changed will go on the Red light, opinions that have remained the same will go on the Green light.
