Critical Literacy
Critical literacy is a way to actively analyze texts and offer strategies for what proponents describe as uncovering underlying messages. For example, the picture to the left. If one of my student saw that, would they understand what it means? Or would they be confused and move on? The goal of these lesson plans is to think critically about the ways texts can be viewed through different lenses. The students will be able to critically analyze the texts read and discussed on our introduction day, they will also be given different accounts of Columbus's arrival from the perspective of the native people. The goal of this lesson is to make the students question what they are learning and reading, even in the school context.
